Tour: Day 13

We say goodbye to Pat, Caterina, Alexis, and other tour members at breakfast. We head to the train station (the one Rick stopped in when a young traveler, met a man in a doctor's lab coat asking for blood and got right back on the train!) It’s much better these days. We’re at ease waiting for our departure.

We arrive at Hotel Smeraldo, once again. They remember us! Caterina’s right once again: Italy’s about relationships. Our room is ready, though it’s only 11 a.m. We go to Roscioli, right across from the hotel, for take-out pizza. The hotel allows us to go into the breakfast room to eat it and even turns on music for our pleasure! I think I will miss this ease and purposefulness the Italians have for making a moment pleasurable!

There’s an on and off soft rain in Rome. But we get out anyway. We climb the Emmanuel Victor monument to see some glorious views of Rome. We find ourselves simply enjoying walking the city without a strict agenda.  I actually find the city beautiful with this gentle rain glistening on the pavement. We’ve had spectacular weather for this trip so these few drops don’t diminish anything.

There’s a small trattoria near Hotel Smeraldo that we want to try: S.Anna Trattoria. It turns out to be a perfect place for our final dinner on this trip. The friendly Sicilian waiter recommends seabass baked in salt and tells us how he taught his girlfriend how to make this dish. We chat with him about Sicily and our time spent there on a Rick Steves tour.

è finita- it is over

Italian 101: Taxi drivers. In Naples, our taxi driver navigates the traffic like it is an orchestrated dance, with the drivers communicating in some silent way with one another. In Rome, our first cabbie is chatty and a tour guide as he brings us to Hotel Smeraldo. He has visited New York City. The Roman cabbie who drives us on our final jaunt through Rome, on the way to the airport, speaks only snippets of English but we have such fun chatting. His gestures and our very basic Italian allow us to understand a lot of what he says. He’s a proud Roman. He lovingly gestures at the traffic and announces, “Bella chaos.” Then he grins and exclaims “Bella Cucina Roma #1” about Rome’s cuisine. It’s an endearing ride to the airport.

Rome Again...

Keep on Traveling!

We hardly have had time to unpack and launder everything before Pat, Mark and I are trading emails about where to go next!  We think we are a terrific traveling trio and have decided to travel together again! AND...this year we will become the Fab Four, as Pat’s niece wants to join us. We met her on the Rick Steves Heart of Ireland tour and she's a very fun and engaging person.

So, what will be our next travel adventure together? The Best of Eastern France in 14 Days!

I must say this South Italy trip was exceptional from beginning to end and I would do it all over again, but there are other places that beckon us. So, on to Burgundy, the French Alps, Provence and more!

Grazie to our fun travel partners on this Best of South Italy in 13 Days tour!

Thanks to you, too, for coming along with us and sharing in the pleasures of South Italy. If you decide to go, I hope your trip is full of many pleasure activist moments!

Ciao!
